This is the story behind the design of our lovely windowWritten by our own dear Father John
THE OVERSHADOWINGThe stained glass window behind the altar invites us to contemplate the various aspects of the mystery of Mary the Mother of Jesus. She is Queen of Apostles and Queen of Heaven. But it is the "Pneuma" or "Holy Spirit" who dominates the work of art. The Holy Spirit who covers Mary with His Shadow is the source of all her greatness. (Luke Ch. 1.) She is also the one who is assumed into heaven to be with her son Jesus Christ until he returns in glory to complete the work of salvation. The face is that of a woman who has suffered much. With the strength that comes from the Holy Spirit she has come through the pain of suffering and her face reflects the deep serenity of compassion for us her children. (Luke Ch. 1.)
The woman crowned with twelve stars is the Mother of God's People ... Mother of the Church. (Revelations Ch. 12; Lumen Gentium Ch. 8.) Her slightly enlarged limbs emphasise her fleshiness and physicality, to remind us that she truly was flesh who gave the Son of God His Flesh. (John Ch. 1.) The yellow beams and the red tongues represent the Light and Love that come from the Father of all through the Spirit. (Acts Ch. 2.) On closer examination one can observe the storm clouds in the celestial background which symbolise the invisible power of the Holy Spirit. (Acts Ch. 2.) That Dove which hovered over Christ at His baptism in the river Jordan and hovered over Mary and the Apostles at Pentecost, was that same dove who was there over the waters at the dawn of creation. (Genesis Ch. 1.)
