NEW PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTThe 3Rivers Leadership Team has
confirmed that the four Parishes, which make up our Pastoral Area,
are to be joined together into one new parish. The parish will adopt
the name of our own Hampshire-born saint and will be known as the
Catholic Parish of St Swithun Wells. St Swithun Wells’ feast
day this year falls on Friday 10th December and it has decided that
we come together on this day.
“It is a bold step but an exciting one” comments Fr Michael
Dennehy, Coordinating Pastor. “And it gives us a rich opportunity to
achieve our vision:
Our Vision is of growing, vibrant communities of Faith in the
Catholic Parish of St Swithun Wells.”
The background to this initiative goes back several months.
There was a joint meeting of all the 3 Rivers Pastoral Councils on
Saturday 6th March, where it was agreed that we should make a formal
request to the Bishop that we may transform the Pastoral Area and
its six churches into one new parish. Our formal request was placed
before the Bishop, who consulted with his Council of Priests in late
May. Our initiative was welcomed by the Diocese and permission
has been granted.
The next step is to prepare ourselves for the new parish and to
develop a plan of action which will transform every aspect of our
Vision into a reality.
With this in mind, the 3 Rivers Pastoral Councils gathered
together this week, on Tuesday 13th July, to discuss and agree, in
outline, to a variety of projects. The projects are geared
toward creating strong foundations upon which to share our talents,
build stewardship and place our Faith in the centre of our lives.
The Leadership Team promises to share the news of our progress
with everyone and will be giving regular announcements between now
and December.

Portsmouth Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes 20 to
27 August, 2010

Thoughts from Father George
I love and hate Lourdes equally. It is a place where
the sacred and the secular meet. Outside the Domain/Grotto area you
can find all sorts of stalls and shops selling their battery
operated ‘winking Jesus’ beside a most moving picture of the Sacred
Heart. Because of this many people are shocked when they first visit
Lourdes. However, after a few days it seduces you. You can almost be
hauntingly, indeed romantically, in love with the place. Once inside
the Grotto area you will know that you are on holy ground. It is
sacred. Very sacred. Be careful what you pray for when you are
there. Miracles do happen, maybe not the way you want them to,
rather the way you need them to.
To see the sick, frail, dying and healthy in
procession putting out their hands to touch the wall of the Grotto
where our Blessed Lady appeared to St. Bernadette is a humbling
experience. You cannot but be moved at the wonder and beauty of God.
In Lourdes you stand on the threshold of great and immense
possibility. Father Michael and I will be leading a group of 32
plus, to join in part with the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
If you would like us to take your prayers, petitions
and Mass intentions to Lourdes, please use the envelope provided and
place it in the Lourdes Pilgrimage Box available in the Welcoming
Area, by the 15 August, 2010. There are still places available on
the Diocesan Pilgrimage. The phone number to contact is 0800 917
3572.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. St. Bernadette,
pray for us. Father
George.

GOLDEN SILENCE - Meditation in Romsey
Meditation is a way of praying that leads us beyond the
limitation of words. It is a time set aside to stilling the mind and
the body, to reaching deeper beyond the chatter and distraction of
the ego and to endeavour to journey to the very centre of ourselves
where Christ dwells within us
Our groups meet weekly and we follow the guidance set by Dom John
Main, OSB who re-introduced this ancient form of prayer as practised
by the Desert Fathers in the fourth century. In 1975 John Main
founded the first centre for Christian Meditation which has now
grown into a flourishing worldwide organisation called the World
Community for Christian Meditation.
When we meet we start with some music, a short reading followed
by 25 minutes of silent meditation and we close with a beautiful
prayer written by Laurence Freeman. This time together has enabled
us to experience a feeling of peace, calm and strength by sharing
this special silence - so beneficial especially at troubled times.
The door is open, everyone is welcome. If you would like to know
more please ring Pat Nash 01794-512006.

Pope Benedict’s Visit to the United Kingdom

It was with great delight and joy that we received confirmation
today that, at the invitation of Her Majesty The Queen, Pope
Benedict will be visiting the United Kingdom from September 16th –
19th.
His visit is the first ever official Papal Visit to the UK. The
visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982 was a pastoral visit only.
Pope Benedict will be received by the Queen at the Palace of
Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. Among other significant moments of the
visit, there will be a public Mass in Glasgow, a major address in
Westminster Hall, meetings with other Christian leaders and leaders
of other major faiths. There will be a prayer vigil in London and
the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, which will take
place at a public Mass in Coventry. Other details of the visit will
emerge in due course.
I am sure that many will want to attend one or other of the
events connected with the visit and that we will all do so with
great joy and thanksgiving.
This is a historic moment in the life of the Catholic community
in the United Kingdom and will be a time of blessing and grace for
all who live in the United Kingdom.

HOLY MASS IN MALAYALAM (SYRO-MALABAR RITE)

Every first Friday of the Month, commencing
on Friday, 5 February, 2010, at Holy Cross Church, Leigh Road,
Eastleigh, starting with the Rosary at 5pm, followed by the Mass at
5.30pm.
Please contact Thomas Siby at
023 80653074 for more details.
The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which
traces its origin to the Apostolate of St. Thomas who, according to
the tradition, landed at Cranganore in 52 AD and founded seven
Christian communities at Palayur, Cranganore, Kokkamangalam,
Kottakavu (Parur), Quilon, Niranam, and Chayal. It is one of the 22
sui iuris Oriental Churches in Catholic Communion with its own
particular characteristics expressed in worship, spirituality,
theology and disciplinary laws.
The early Christian community in India was known as
St. Thomas Christians. In the course of history this Church entered
into life-relation with the Christian communities which came to be
known as the East Syrian Church. This relationship made the Thomas
Christians share the liturgical, spiritual and other ecclesiastical
traditions with the East Syrian Church. At the same time St. Thomas
Christians kept their distinctive character especially in Church
administration and socio-cultural and ascetico-spiritual life.
In the 16th Century with the arrival of the
Portuguese, a new era began in the life of this Church, i.e., the
latinization of its liturgy and the efforts of the St. Thomas
Christians to free itself from this situation. In the Nineteenth
Century this Church was designated as the Syro-Malabar Church in the
documents from the Roman Curia under which name it is known today.
At present there are five Archdioceses - 36,74,115
faithful, with 7,252 priests (3,617 diocesan and 3,635 religious),
and 34,769 women religious and 4729 men religious
